Mr Ronald Morgan Nutt

Ron Nutt was born in Mountain Ash, South Wales in May 1932, the youngest of 8 siblings. On leaving school, he started working as a porter at the railway station, but at 18 joined the RAF to do his National Service. He moved around several airfields, before ending up at RAF Upwood. Whilst there he marched in the Coronation parade for Queen Elizabeth II in 1952.

It was also whilst at Upwood when he met Winifred Seamark, who lived in Earith (near Huntingdon)at the time, at a local dance. He returned to Wales after being demobbed, but wrote to Win’s parents to ask if he could come back and lodge with them! He worked for Plessey in Huntingdon and then Pye’s in Cambridge working on televisions, but the indoor jobs did not suit him, which is when he joined the Cambridge City Police.

Ron and Win were married in 1955. They moved to Cambridge once Ron had joined the Police, first to Cockburn Street and then to Derwent Close where the family grew. Ron was a very keen sportsman, and represented the City Police (and County once amalgamated) at football, cricket, tennis, table tennis, golf and snooker. After retiring he played bowls regularly.

He retired from the police after his 30 years of service (where he worked on the beat, in Panda cars, Traffic patrol cars, CID and also the radio room) in 1987, and took up the post of Head Porter at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Whilst there he was lucky enough to meet almost all members of the Royal Family. He remained there until finally retiring after 14 years.

In retirement both he and Win enjoyed travelling, visiting such exotic places as Borneo, Thailand and Egypt, as well as many countries in Europe.

Ron was a loving husband to Win and a fantastic father to Andrew, Lesley and Gareth. He will be sorely missed.
